5 Reasons Why a Cat Makes the Perfect Pet
Everyone says that a dog is a man’s best friend, but we are pretty sure that that accolade applies to cats, too. There are numerous reasons why cats make wonderful companions – and very often there are advantages to having a feline companion that you simply do not get with other pets. Below are five reasons why cats make great companions.
1. They are cute.
Everyone has to acknowledge this one: cats are just so cute and cuddly. Snuggle up to their soft fur, watch their antics and feel the love! Cats are very affectionate pets in general, and they are more than happy to creep onto your lap or wind around your legs. If you see your kitty rubbing their forehead against you or their belongings, then that is a real sign of affection: they have scent glands located in their forehead, and rubbing their scent onto you is their way of saying that they want to be connected to you.
2. They are low maintenance.
Dogs might need to be walked twice a day at least. Many pets need to be bathed and groomed on a regular basis. Cats? Well, cats mainly just take care of themselves. They groom themselves (constantly), exercise themselves whether out in the yard or indoors with their toys, and are generally pretty easy to toilet train. Of course, you will still need to take your cat to the vet every year or so, and take care to keep up with their de-fleaing and de-worming regimes. But, if you live a sedentary life style and would find walking a dog too difficult, a cat is the perfect pet.
3. They are super clever!
Cats are very intelligent animals. They can learn new skills (such as toilet training) and they stay interested in the world around them. Spend more than a few minutes with a cat and you will discover that they talk to you as well – you just need to work out what they are saying. In short, cats are communicative, inquisitive, intelligent animals – you will never have a dull moment with a cat as your companion. In fact, nowadays, you can even purchase specialized apps for cats on your smartphone, which provide the cat with various puzzles to play and problems to solve in order to sharpen that cunning feline brain and keep them entertained.
4. Every cat is an individual.
Each cat has their own individual personality. Just as with human friends, getting to know the other person is a joy in itself, so too with a cat companion you can spend a life time getting to know each other. Of course, this also means that you should take care to choose a cat for a companion whose personality clicks with yours – and those of your family or house mates as well, if you are living with other people.
5. Cats live long lives.
Cats usually live well into their teens, and many of them reach twenty and beyond. That means that they make great companions for long periods of time. You and your cat can grow old together if you like! Just make sure that you are prepared to make the commitment for two decades or so to care for your feline companion.
Other reasons to choose a cat for your companion.
There are many other reasons why cats make great pets. Some people choose a cat because they will help to keep mice and rats at bay around their home, for example. For some potential pet owners, an allergy to cats can lead them to feel wary of selecting a new feline companion. However, it is definitely worth knowing that there are several hairless breeds of cats or hypoallergenic breeds (such as the Russian Blue) which are usually totally fine for people with mild cat allergies.
As the above 5 reasons show, a cat will be a cute, affectionate, intelligent and entertaining friend for life. Whether you get them from a rescue center or a professional breeder, you can rest assured that your life will never be the same again – in a good way. So, all that you need to do now is to start getting everything ready for the arrival of your new feline friend!
