Ask your mum or maybe your grandmother if they know about the infamous Salem Saberhagen from Sabrina, and it might make them smile a bit or laugh. As you may or may not know, Salem is a black cat from Sabrina the Teenage Witch show that was on air first on 1970’s as an animated cartoon to the most recent and darkest one in Netflix. They have made various renditions and edits, but the most iconic Salem would be from the 1990’s one – with the one liner and sarcastic replies.
Salem has become a traditional meme, if you recall a cat GIF wherein he sassily cleans his nails, that’s him. His reign of one liner has made it even to this year – making waves in chatrooms and even back to the media! One of his iconic blurts would be: Curse my sarcastic nature!
Aside from his fame in social medias and gag sites, Salem has become an influence to most artworks, jokes, as well as in life! His self respect is pretty high – something that should be applied in most things – and the hidden love and respect he has for his housemates is actually genuine. While Salem might be the epitome of sarcasm and cattitude, he is actually a decent being that you can learn from.
He might have started as a criminal – yes he was a guerilla leader who wanted to take over the world, but it has transformed him into something more understanding with Sabrina. He has become more understanding with her and helped her with something she’s curious of something or wants to ask for advice. He might be sarcastic most of the time, but he is a caring cat.
From motivating one liners to being lazy, you might even go as far as saying that he’s a relatable feline. He always tease someone when they’ve discovered something interesting from them (take for instance when he read Sabrina’s diary at some point) or being continually hungry throughout the day. His favourite word is no and most of the time he is lazy – something that most people want to do on their downtime. Salem-ing should be a thing!
Aside from the sarcastic nature and the melodramatic reactions, Salem has always been viewed upon as a cute and cuddly cat. It has turned into a symbol of Halloween and horror, and at the same time, became an icon for goths and sometimes for harajuku fashion items. Salem is one of the probable reasons why some girls find charm with a black cat despite the accursed rumours about cats and their bad luck.
While you don’t have a real life Salem beside you making iconic one liners and sarcastic replies, you can expect the same thing from your cats – they might be usually aloof and cold when you need them, but they are actually caring creatures. So maybe your investment for cat trees and cat outfits are not in vain after all!
If you use a lot of social media like Facebook, you might know about this lovable fat cat with the greyish fur and the tail rings named Pusheen. Pusheen has then appeared in numerous things like stuffed toys, keychains, pillows, and more! It’s not really hard to see as to why Pusheen soared to popularity within a short while, it’s adorable and some would even go as far as saying it’s relatable.
If you don’t know about it already, Pusheen started as a character on 2010 in its own mini series made by Claire Belton and Andrew Duff. She had a unique and fun personality – an undying love for baked goods, partying, and being lazy. Belton decided to do more for her character and then started her very own Tumblr page wherein its popularity rose to over 10,000 followers – within mere weeks!
Pusheen’s popularity never stopped growing, she garnered lots of fans and even went as far as making Pusheen themed goodies that they would eventually show off to Belton. Then the fans doubled when Facebook contacted Belton on 2013 about making Pusheen into digital stickers – admit it, you like using Pusheen to express your emotions online – wherein people used Pusheen over 10 million times a day!
Popularity never stopped for Pusheen, every gimmick they do made her gain more fans and eventually adding millions to the people who already like her! The offers never stopped – a renowned 118 year-old toy manufacturer named Gund eventually noticed the rising popularity of the chubby and bubbly cat.
Gund then released adorable plushies of Pusheen and has become a staple for every Pusheen fan all over the world. They started with the adorable plushies, slowly going for fluffy keychains with loads of different designs. What’s more, they have an entire series of Pusheen holding food – no wonder she is relatable to most people!
Barnes & Noble along with H&M created their own Pusheen trend as well – making the original Pusheen fans happier. It seems even the people who doesn’t know about Pusheen seem to grow to like the animated cat. From stickers to loads of fan arts, it’s hard to say that Pusheen’s old age causes the decline of its popularity – it still has loads of collaborations that pleases the fans and cute enthusiasts around the globe.
Aside from the technicality of Pusheen’s fame, it’s sure as day as to why this chubby cat is famous. The creators made her relatable to most of the things people and young ones do as well as created her to be adorable and cute as well. Overall, it might even follow the footsteps of the most iconic cat symbol – Hello Kitty – and eventually become a timeless mascot.

The New Year is approaching and with it are the many resolutions that people try to follow. Whether it’s about eating healthier foods, being in the gym more, or lessening some of those spending sprees, individuals come up with something they’d want to improve about themselves. But what about our cats? What about our bundles of fluffy joy? Do we leave them out the fun?
There are a lot of things that you can help your cat do differently for next year! You can spice up your cat’s environment with toys that help enrich their living experience, schedule regular vet visits, and more. So strap yourselves in and be prepared to have a better 2019 with your furry loved ones!
Getting a Move On
Fitness goals are one of the most common New Year’s resolution. A lot of us would want to look better by exercising, to be more active, and to be healthier, instead of just laying on bed all day once we get our day offs. Our cats need some exercise too, so for 2019, we should all aim to spend more time to play with them, and to get them running. Not only will this help improve their health, but it will also help us bond with them, ultimately strengthening the relationship.
Teach them a Neat Trick
People say that cats are a thing of their own. They don’t like to be bossed around, or to be told what to do, which would mean that training them is extremely difficult, if not impossible. However, cats can be trained and you can train your beloved cat too! Attend a class, watch a video, or get a cat specialist to help you train them. It’ll take some time, but you’ll be able to impress yourself (and a lot of people) once you get even one trick done.
Eating Better with the New Year
Help your cats improve their health by making sure that they’re eating better and getting all the necessary nutrition. Have a chat with your vet, and ask whether you’re giving them the right kind and right amount of food. You might also want to talk to them on how to successfully transition food types (from kitten to adult food or from adult food to senior formula) efficiently.
We all know how long you’ve been stalling that visit to the groomer’s, but it’s now high time to get your pet cat groomed. Although your cat can pretty much groom themselves, a visit to the groomer is important as well. The groomer would be able to shampoo, nail clip, and trim your cat’s fur, giving them the equivalent of having a refreshing day at a beauty salon.
Although we all like familiarity, New Year is an opportunity for us to do something new and better. But we don’t have to do it alone. It’s important for us to include our feline companions in the fun of New Year’s resolutions too. There’s so much new things to do and to learn, so take your cat along the ride!
